Dear Apple, I hate you

“Those Apple keyboards are horrendous. Especially as the computers, as the laptops get newer and newer … the keyboards are worse.”

So I have a 13 inch 2017 mac book pro for school.

Lately random keys have ceased having any functionality, sometimes its a day where the ‘y’ key does not want to work, someday its ‘backspace’, and today it was the space bar. I live 2 hours from the nearest apple store so I thought, hey I’ve built keyboards before, this is as simple as removing the key and cleaning under it and placing it back on. But when anyone removes the space bar including experts, it breaks, and if it breaks the entire top half of the laptop needs to be replaced. So now it’s the week of a code challenge and I got no space bar.

I read that this can all be fixed for free because they are aware of the issue. But its not free for me because “Note: If your MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro has any damage which impairs the service, that issue will need to be repaired first. In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the repair.” So if their buttons that self destruct when you try and fix them are damaged by you trying to fix them you're SOL.

But apple was extra tricky about it, they never admitted that their keyboards are faulty so the ‘repair’ that you get is another defective keyboard. On top of that you only get 2 repairs before you are disqualified from the repair program. On top of that because its not an official recall you might not be aware of it because they didn’t have to make an effort to tell the people who qualify.

So it’s like driving along and having your Firestone tire blow out, only to get another defective Firestone tire as a replacement.

I could wait for the class action lawsuit about this to be resolved but its been going on for 2 years now and I sense apple has the means to drag it out for a long time https://www.classlawgroup.com/apple-macbook-pro-keyboard-defect-lawsuit/.

But Matt you might say, what do you expect apple to do, that’s all the keyboards they have? But that isn’t the case, as of 2020 all new Mac book and Mac book pros use the “magic” keyboard design (the same design they were using prior to 2016) So they are aware the old designs don’t work and are touting their original functional design as a feature of the new mac books, while withholding the fix from the users who need it.

So if I want a Macbook with a keyboard that works all I would have to do is get mine “fixed” at apple, then I could trade it in at best-buy for 550 and buy the new 1200 dollar model for only 650. I shouldn't have to spend 650 dollars for a functional 13 inch laptop keyboard. For that price I could buy 7 Razer Huntsman’s and they have mechanical switches that work and make rainbows.

I’m tired of your form over function keyboards that can barely take a year of light use and your corporate half solutions. It’s not sexy, it’s not cute, it sucks and I hate you.
